Randall Brian Lopez Obituary, Santa Fe County, NM Officer Involved Shooting Death

Authorities are investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning after a Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy came under fire during an attempted traffic stop.

According to the New Mexico State Police, the incident began around 4 a.m. on April 18 when a deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle for speeding near the intersection of Agua Fria and San Felipe. Officials said the rider fled the initial stop, prompting a pursuit.

The motorcycle was later located near the Vista Linda Apartments at 6332 Entrada Del Milagro, where investigators said it entered a parking area and attempted to escape through a corridor toward Paseo Del Sol. Authorities reported that the deputy pursued the rider on foot after activating emergency lights and exiting his vehicle.

During the confrontation, investigators say the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Randall Brian Lopez, and the motorcycle went to the ground. At that point, Lopez allegedly drew a firearm and fired at the deputy, missing him. The deputy returned fire, striking Lopez.

Emergency aid was provided at the scene by responding deputies until paramedics arrived, but Lopez was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts. The deputy involved was not struck by gunfire but sustained facial burns consistent with muzzle flash exposure, officials said.

State police also reported that the firearm used by Lopez was stolen. Authorities noted that Lopez had an extensive prior criminal history, including charges such as first-degree murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, among others.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau continues to review the incident. The identity of the deputy involved has not been released as the investigation remains ongoing.

The case remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the full sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
