It is with profound sorrow that authorities have confirmed the deaths of 23-year-old Devon Briggs of Buena Vista, Georgia, and 22-year-old Evelyn Plakal of Elgin, South Carolina, following a fatal single-vehicle crash in Augusta.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the Richmond County Coroner’s Office, the incident occurred along Riverwatch Parkway near Goodrich Street, close to mile marker 2 and the area near the historic Confederate Power Works chimney. Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 6 p.m. on Monday evening following reports of a serious traffic accident.

Preliminary investigations indicate the crash took place on April 18. Officials report that the vehicle was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it entered a curve. The vehicle then reportedly left the north shoulder of the roadway, struck a guardrail, and descended an embankment toward Goodrich Street before overturning.

Authorities stated that Devon Briggs, identified as the driver, was ejected from the vehicle during the impact. Evelyn Plakal was found inside the overturned car. Despite rapid emergency response efforts, both were pronounced deceased at the scene at 5:56 p.m.

The sudden loss of the two young adults has left families and the wider community in deep mourning. Loved ones are now grappling with the shock of a tragedy that unfolded in moments but has left a lasting impact on all who knew them. Both Devon and Evelyn are being remembered as young individuals with promising futures ahead of them.
