Authorities have confirmed the tragic deaths of 23-year-old Devon Briggs of Buena Vista, Georgia, and 22-year-old Evelyn Plakal of Elgin, South Carolina, following a fatal single-vehicle crash on Riverwatch Parkway in Augusta.
The incident occurred on April 18, and authorities were called to the scene around 6 p.m. after reports of a serious traffic accident. The crash site was near Goodrich Street, close to mile marker 2 and the historic Confederate Power Works chimney. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Richmond County Coroner’s Office, confirmed the details of the collision.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it lost control while navigating a curve. The vehicle veered off the north shoulder of the road, struck a guardrail, and then descended an embankment before overturning. Devon Briggs, the driver, was ejected from the vehicle during the impact, while Evelyn Plakal was found inside the overturned car. Despite rapid medical attention from emergency responders, both were pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 p.m.
