The Ottumwa community is mourning the tragic loss of Jeremy Ray Showalter, 45, who was killed following a devastating early-morning shooting at his residence on Evergreen in Ottumwa, Iowa.

According to Lt. Jason Bell of the Ottumwa Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:35 a.m. on April 21, 2026, which reported a male had been shot at 333 Evergreen. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials, alongside the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department, found Showalter suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home.

He was quickly transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where medical personnel worked to save his life. Despite their efforts, Showalter tragically died from the injuries sustained in the shooting.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal Investigation, along with crime scene technicians, assisted local authorities in processing the scene. Tactical officers from the Iowa State Patrol also joined the investigation during the early stages, securing the area and searching for a suspect.

At approximately 4:22 p.m. the same day, authorities announced the arrest of 24-year-old Michael Joe Johnson of Sigourney in connection with the fatal shooting. Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. The investigation remains ongoing.

Officials have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. However, investigators continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the investigation continues, family, friends, and the Ottumwa community are left in deep sorrow, struggling to process the sudden and violent loss of Jeremy Showalter. His passing has left a painful void in the lives of those who knew him, as loved ones begin the difficult process of mourning and remembering his life.
