Authorities in Beatrice, Nebraska, are investigating a deadly Tuesday morning shooting that left one man dead and another in custody following a multi-agency response.

According to the Beatrice Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of 9th and Summit Streets after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting screaming and loud banging noises early Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, officers found 37-year-old Joshua May lying in a grassy area between Summit Street and a nearby sidewalk. Emergency responders transported May to Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, a coordinated investigation involving the Beatrice Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and U.S. Marshals Service was launched. Investigators soon identified 31-year-old Justis Barnhouse of Beatrice as the primary suspect in the shooting. Barnhouse was arrested in Lincoln on Tuesday, where authorities apprehended him based on an outstanding warrant related to the case.
