The City of Poughkeepsie is reeling in grief after a tragic shooting near Stitzel Field on Lincoln Avenue claimed the life of 46-year-old Carl Chambers of Marlboro, New York, leaving a community shaken by sudden and devastating violence.
According to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the incident occurred on April 19, 2026, at approximately 6:33 p.m., when public safety dispatchers received a Raven gunshot detection alert alongside multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire near an adult soccer game in progress. Responding officers arrived to find a large crowd gathered near the field and quickly determined that multiple individuals had exchanged gunfire across the street from the park.
Authorities reported that those directly involved in the shooting fled the scene before police arrived and have not yet been located. Amid the chaos, officers learned that one victim had already been transported to a local hospital. That individual was later identified as Carl Chambers, who, despite medical efforts, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A second victim, who was taken separately to another hospital, survived and is currently listed in stable condition, according to officials.
Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that several individuals were involved in the exchange, with at least three firearms discharged, including what is believed to be a high-powered rifle. The presence of multiple weapons has added complexity to an already serious investigation.
The Police Department’s Detective Division, supported by specialized units such as the Technical Assistance Response Unit and Crime Scene Unit, is actively pursuing leads through evidence collection and witness interviews.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the loss of Carl Chambers has left family, friends, and the broader community mourning a life taken too soon.
