A quiet suburban street in Green, Ohio, became the scene of heartbreak when 9-year-old Samuel Rife, son of Rev. J. Harlen Rife, was fatally struck by a vehicle while playing near his home on Peachwood Way. The tragic incident occurred on April 17, around 4:30 p.m., sending shockwaves through his family, church, and local community.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched after reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle. Samuel, who had been playing outside near his home, suddenly ran into the street, where he was struck by a 2025 Jeep Wrangler. The 81-year-old driver stopped immediately and stayed at the scene as medical teams rushed to help.
Samuel was quickly transported to Akron Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The news of his passing has deeply affected those who knew him, especially within the Greensburg United Methodist Church, where his father, Pastor J. Harlen Rife, leads.
Family members, friends, and community members remember Samuel as a vibrant, caring child with a heart for others. He often volunteered at local food distributions in Akron and Canton, always eager to help those in need. His short life left an indelible mark on his community, and now, local supporters have created a GoFundMe campaign in his memory. Funds raised will go to support Family Support Specialists at Green City Schools, a fitting tribute to Samuel’s spirit of giving.
As the investigation into the crash continues, authorities have stated that neither speed nor impairment were factors, and no charges have been filed at this time. The Summit Metro Crash Response Team is actively looking into the incident.
